BURGLARS who blew up the shutters of a goldsmith shop in Segama, Kota Kinabalu, did not get away with any loot because of the powerful explosion, Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin said.
They miscalculated the amount of explosives used, which ripped the shop’s shutters and left burn marks in the interior, he said at the scene of the crime following the 2.40am incident.
Chan said he was relaying what police had briefed him.
“The police suspected it is an attempted burglary. Just few days ago, the Statistics Department had listed Sabah as having the lowest crime rate in the country.
“I hope the police would be able to maintain this good record next year,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Earlier, police were seen wrapping up their forensic investigation as the whole area was cordoned off, causing minor traffic in the city’s Segama complex area.
Also with Chan was Likas assemblyman Tan Lee Fat, who said the burglars used a pipe bomb.
“When the explosion was too powerful, they ran away,” he said.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Habibi Majinji is expected to hold a press conference over the incident later today. – December 31, 2018.
