UNLIKE Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional always paid Felda settlers’ living allowance on time, said Najib Razak.
The former prime minister, urging the ruling pact not to blame the previous government for its problems, said under PH, settlers had to wait up to two months to get the funds.
“(But under PH,) I’ve heard that they did not receive the allowance up to two months after the date they should have gotten it.”
He said among the reasons for the delay are Felda’s capital flow problem, caused by plummeting palm oil prices, and the agency’s rising management costs.
Another reason is PH’s election pledge to write off settlers’ debts, he said, which resulted in settlers’ reluctance to make repayments.
Najib said Felda is worth RM21 billion and has a debt of RM8 billion, thus, selling off its assets will not help much.
Most of the debt is due to soft loans meant for a replanting scheme, and a project to upgrade settlers’ homes, he said.
Both were initiated during Najib’s era, with the aim of increasing yields at old plantations and boosting settlers’ welfare.
Playing down Felda’s hotel and land scandals, he said the acquisition of hotels in other countries is not an issue if they are bought at above market price and do not lead to the agency incurring huge debts. – December 27, 2018.
