MALAYSIA’S development is on track and the country does not need to be saved, Umno Supreme Council member Shahrir Samad said today.
The Johor Baru MP said the opposition had been recycling the same economic issues about Malaysia since 1970s, especially the country’s debt.
“We should not let ourselves be incited by those who want power. Malaysia doesn’t need to be saved because Malaysia is on the right track.
“Our success is evident and proven, only those who want power will make up stories,” the Barisan National Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) chairman said when officiating the Kubang Pasu Umno division meeting in Jitra, Kedah.
He was speaking in the former stronghold of Dr Mahathir Mahathir, who stepped down as prime minister in 2003 after 22 years in power. He held the Kubang Pasu constituency for seven terms from 1974 to 2004.
Dr Mahathir is now leading Bersatu and opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan and has been going on a nationwide roadshow called “Save Malaysia, Save the People” to tell Malaysians that the Najib administration must be voted out in the next general election.
Shahrir said the opposition talked about country’s debt without mentioning Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP), which had exceeded trillions of ringgit.
He said Prime Minister Najib Razak had brought many changes to the country since he took power, continuing the legacy left behind by his predecessor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, or affectionately known as Pak Lah.
“People criticised Pak Lah, but for me he was the one who managed to restore the late Tun Razak’s philosophy in development,” he said, adding that he disagreed with Dr Mahathir’s policies to focus on developing Kuala Lumpur.
“What will happen to Johor Baru, Alor Star, Kuantan, Sabah and Sarawak if all the development is only in Kuala Lumpur?” – August 19, 2017.
