IT would be disappointing if indeed there had been an order to remove wanted businessman Low Taek Jho’s name from the 1Malaysia Development Bhd audit report, said Khairy Jamaluddin.
The Rembau MP said it is best to wait for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to complete its probe into the tampering of the report.
“If there had been instructions to ‘erase’ Jho Low’s presence at the 1MDB board of directors meeting, it would be a serious act, which is disappointing. We should wait for the findings of the (MACC) investigation,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
Auditor-General Madinah Mohamad over the weekend confirmed that former prime minister Najib Razak had ordered that the original 1MDB audit report be altered.
“The matter (Jho Low’s presence) has never been reported to the cabinet. A lot of things regarding 1MDB were not told to the ministers,” added Khairy today.
The Rembau MP, who has been vocal about Najib’s alleged wrongdoing and scandals involving 1MDB after Barisan Nasional lost the 14th general election, also said an auditor-general’s report should remain independent.
“It cannot be ordered to be amended and such.
“As a minister, my ministry had been investigated, audited and criticised and we accept it as this (is part of governance),” said Khairy, who is also former youth and sports minister.
The MACC has begun investigations into the tampering of the report, the agency said in a statement last night.
It said that it had compared the original version of the report against the final draft released by the National Audit Department in 2016.
It said it would also call up several witnesses. – November 26, 2018.
