UMNO and PAS should continue to work together on issues of common interest, but should not formalise the cooperation with a merger, said former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy said while both parties represent Malays and Islam, they hold different ideologies.
“It should not be formalised. I’m not for a merger. I don’t think it can happen anyway, we are fundamentally different parties,” he told reporters when met at Parliament today.
“We can cooperate on certain issues. We can cooperate tactically. There is not going to be a formal collation or merger. We agree on certain things like ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination),” said Khairy.
The Rembau MP commended PAS for not placing a candidate against Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan in the Rantau by-election.
“I thank PAS for deciding to sit out of it. I hope PAS voters will give support to Hasan. This is good news for us. We do not want to have spoiler votes,” Khairy said.
A special elections court ruled last Friday that the Rantau election was invalid and Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan was ordered to vacate the seat.
A date for the by-election will be set by the Election Commission if no party files an appeal within 14 days of the ruling. – November 21, 2018.
