Umno drops plan to get into govt via back door

UMNO will not strike a deal with any Pakatan Harapan party in its quest to get back into the government before the 15th general election, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said the party does not want to get involved in fights between Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over the prime minister’s post.

“When elephants fight, it’s best that we just watch. We should not be in the middle, we should not even clap. The situation is bound to change. We should not negotiate.

“We should strengthen Umno as an opposition party and step up our cooperation with PAS,” he told party members during an Umno leadership roadshow in Kuala Selangor today.

Dr Mahathir’s position as prime minister is viewed by some as shaky as his party has just 14 seats in Parliament, while PKR has 49 MPs.

The other PH components, DAP and Amanah, have 42 and 10 MPs, respectively.

Under an agreement forged between PH parties, Dr Mahathir will make way for Anwar to take over as prime minister in about two years’ time.

Both men have indicated that they will stick to the plan.

Zahid said he has instructed his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, to form an Umno-PAS committee, aimed at finding common ground between the parties.

Mohamad said they have held preliminary discussions, especially on the division of seats.

He said PAS is realistic about being unable to capture Putrajaya, and that it does not mind contesting “lesser” parliamentary seats where it is likely to win.

“We don’t mind letting them (PAS) have the bulk of state seats in some states, but we do want to be part of the state government’s executive council.” – November 18, 2018.

  • In this new era, single race parties will get smaller and smaller. The only way to grow big is to go multi-racial.

  • First of all, Zahid, I am not even sure, that when the elephants fight, you would still be in the land of the free and not in jail instead. Second, I sincerely doubt Hadi and co would allow UMNO - let alone you - dictate the direction.
Bottom line? UMNO needs to prep up for a long, cold winter as Opposition.
