SELANGOR Umno wants all Malay-majority state seats that were contested by its Barisan Nasional partners, believing that it stands a better chance of winning them in the 15th general election.

Its liaison chief, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said of the state’s 56 seats, 37 are Malay-majority.

“Under the new formula, we want all Malay-majority seats handed back to Umno. We can no longer follow the previous quota system concerning the sharing of seats.

“In some Malay-majority seats that were contested by our BN partners, we know we will lose when their candidates are named (for GE15).

“We want the Umno president to take into consideration our views and discuss the matter with the other BN components. What is important for us is to win back the state government, not fighting over seat allocations based on the quota, which will result in us losing,” he said at a special meeting between the Umno central leadership, led by president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and state party leaders in Kuala Selangor today.

Ismail Sabri said another way to wrest Selangor from Pakatan Harapan is by cooperating with arch-rival PAS, with the backing of Umno’s grassroots.

The party vice-president said cooperation with the Islamist PAS is important to avoid three-cornered fights, adding that such contests will see both Umno and PAS lose out, as seen in GE14.

“If we can work with PAS, I am sure we can win most of the 37 seats.”

In the May 9 elections, Umno won only four state seats and PAS, one, in Selangor – a far cry from GE13, when the BN lynchpin secured 12 seats and PAS, 15. – November 18, 2018.

  • They are playing the racial card. The merger proposed by Zahid is s racial and religion based.
This is not healthy for national integration

  • Even if Umno names the most rabid Malays they will lose because the Malays are fully aware now of the grand thievery that has been happening.

  • If there is no integrity in the person or party contesting, no matter who he/she is, the Rakyat will never vote him/her. Dont expect the Rakyat to close an eye and be forgiving as they were mostly over the past 60 years.
Those who still don't understand the needs and aspirations of New Malaysia are really stupid to the core

  • This is the clearest message for MCA yet to quit BN since Zahid proposed the UMNO PAS merger. It is understandable that Wee, like his predecessor Liow is a little hard of hearing. Perhaps it would be easier if we spell it out for Wee - G E T O U T!
