AN Umno Youth member is shocked to have found his name on the PKR Selangor membership roll and to be eligible for voting in the just-concluded party elections.

Kota Raja Umno Youth assistant secretary Muhammad Nur Aiman Abdullah said he found this out when he received a voice message on his phone from an unknown number, telling him to vote and who to vote for.

This happened a few months ago, before PKR members in the Subang division in Selangor voted on October 14 in the elections that were held in stages by state.

Nur Aiman said the voice on the message sounded like that of deputy president hopeful Rafizi Ramli, who is challenging the incumbent Mohamed Azmin Ali for the post.

“Several days before polling day, I again received the same message. This time I managed to record it,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Nur Aiman also replayed the recorded voice message for The Malaysian Insight.

Not long after receiving the second message, he received a PKR membership status verification link sent through WhatsApp.

“When I went through the list, I was shocked to find I was a PKR member and I was eligible to vote. It then dawned on me why I had been receiving those voice messages reminding me to go out and vote,” said the Umno member for more than a decade.

The voice message, which he played for The Malaysian Insight, said this: “You are a registered PKR member in Subang and are eligible to vote in this election.

“The polling will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 9am to 5pm at the Paya Jaras MBSA hall at section U19, Sg Buloh.

“I hope you will vote for me. Press 1 if you are voting for me,” said the voice message.

Nur Aiman said he was an Umno loyalist and had never supported or joined any other party.

He said after finding his name on the list, he immediately informed his division’s Youth chief.

Last week, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the party will only clean up the membership list after the party polls.

This followed complaints over the election, which used online voting for its one-member-one-vote system, and saw missing or unregistered votes, as well as claims by “members” who said they never registered to join the party.

PKR experienced a surge in membership numbers following the 14th general election and Pakatan Hraapan’s take over of the federal government.

Selangor and Sabah are the two states with the largest number of members. Selangor has more than 90,000 while Sabah has more than 52,000.

Other controversies in PKR’s membership roll include the surge in membership in the Julau division in Sarawak, which spiked from 635 members on June 26 to 13,000 the next day, a jump of 2,000%.

The official results of the election will be announced at party’s 13th annual congress in Shah Alam this weekend.

Overall, 300,000 new members registered to join the party after GE14. The new members make up about 40% of the party’s more than 800,000 members. – November 16, 2018.

  • I dont mean to be racist but since UMNO is a race based party - how can an indian muslim be a member of UMNO. Same as Reezal and others.

    • Because the definition of who could be a Malay in our constitution allows it. Go and check the constitution. Even Ridhuan Tee can claim to be a Malay.

    • 'Malay' in the current context and with the constitutional definition is losing any cultural or ethnic meaning it ever had and is fast becoming an almost arbitrary administrative construct.

    • From various indicators, sometimes it seems that Invoke is at risk of becoming UMNO-BN cybertroopers 2.0... I hope this will change. Saya tak pernah menyumbang derma kerana awal-awal dah rasa kurang selesa dengan konsep Invoke.

    • There is a dejavu quality to this. First, Rafizi will deny everything and blame everything on you know who. Then Anwar will say he has listened to the recording and declare he is satisfied there was "no wrong doing". Then Kak Wan will say she has met with the voter personally ...

  • Great that this has surface and being true spirit of PKR this must be seriously probe and investigated into and make the findings known to all or the very least PKR's members. Such things are bound to happen and it cannot be ignore and sweep under the carpet. All these has finger print and in view its electronic in nature better still as it can be route back to the source. Get the culprit apprehended and dealt severely with them showing that PKR does not tolerate such behaviour else its just a matter of time PKR would be history.
