THE Penang government is considering a proposal to restructure government-linked corporations to ensure there is no overlapping with federal government agencies, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

Penang has 11 GLCs under the state government, with funding of RM87.2 million from 2016 to September this year.

The state will continue to empower the GLCs to be more competitive, independent and productive so they could each achieve their objectives, he said.

The state would also offer top posts in the GLCs to business and management professionals.

State GLC heads would not be enjoying fat salaries, he added.

“Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has already proposed that GLC board members and heads in this Pakatan Harapan administration should neither be politicians nor paid high salaries.

“They should be paid appropriately and their bonuses should be based on the financial performance of the respective GLCs.

“This will make the GLCs more competitive and help boost the revenues of the state and country,” he said during question time in the state legislative assembly this morning.

Chow was replying to Lee Khai Loon (PH-Machang Bubuk) who asked for a list of all state GLCs and their funding since 2016.

Lee also asked if the state would restructure the companies and how it planned to manage the GLCs better to optimise their funding.

Chow told Lee that he would provide the list of GLCs and the money they received later. – November 15, 2018.
