POLICE will continue its investigation on claims that the tablets used in the e-voting at PKR’s Julau division election last Saturday had been tampered with despite the party today accepting the results of the election.
The head of Sarawak police commercial crime investigation department, Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah, told The Malaysian Insight that they now need to take a statement from PKR’s central election committee (JPP) chairman Rashid Din.
Rashid earlier issued a statement saying that the committee had accepted the explanations of computer technicians running the e-voting system and the denial of a US-based software company that their Prey anti-theft app could wipe out data on devices it was downloaded into.
Deputy presidential hopeful Rafizi Ramli and a JPP member, who lodged a police report at 4.42am in Damansara on Sunday, had both claimed that Prey was a malware and could wipe all data in the devices the app is downloaded into.
Four police reports were lodged on Saturday and Sunday over the alleged cyber breach.
Rodziah Ismail, who supports Rafizi and is contesting for the women’s deputy post, also lodged a report at the Julau police station on Saturday evening, saying she suspected the party’s central election committee systems and IT unit head Alvin Teoh of installing the app.
Mustafa said he would fly to Kuala Lumpur “as soon as I can get an appointment” to interview Rashid.
He also said the “tampered with” tablets had yet to be send to the police’s digital forensic laboratory in Kuala Lumpur for testing.
He said the completed investigation papers would then be forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor for any further action as is the norm.
Rashid said the decision to uphold the Julau division election result was made after it was found that vote data was not affected by Prey.
The results of the Julau polls were suspended after police seized several tablets. – November 13, 2018.
