A MEETING has been scheduled between Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the National Academic Advisory Council, and Education Policy Department on the overhaul of the education system, said Education Minister Maszlee Malik.

Maszlee said he arranged the meeting, but did not give a date.

“I need to get the National Academic Advisory Council we appointed a couple of months ago into the picture. We also need to get the Education Policy Department.

“I have arranged a meeting with Dr Mahathir to listen to his aspirations and what he really wants from us,” Maszlee told reporters at Parliament lobby today.

Yesterday in Singapore, Dr Mahathir had reportedly said he wanted Maszlee to overhaul the “bad” education system.

Dr Mahathir had said this at a high-tea event with the Malaysian diaspora in Singapore. He was asked for his opinion on the Malaysian education system.

“The current education system is bad. It needs to be revolutionised. What they learn is not what they should learn,” the prime minister had said.

“We need to change the curriculum and timetable of what they learn in school.”

Maszlee said he had a meeting with Dr Mahathir last week where he was told to revamp the education system.

“I was surprised that Dr Mahathir announced before we were able to come out with any statement about it,” he said, adding that he was happy Dr Mahathir was being proactive about the matter.

He also said the prime minister is focused on reforming the people’s culture and attitude by instilling good values.

“So he did ask me to continue his struggle. So that was the meeting we had last week where he explicitly said ‘please continue my fight to change the minds of Malaysians, make them more hardworking and have good values, like the Japanese’,” said Maszlee. – November 13, 2018.
