ABDUL Wahid Omar’s appointment as the chairman of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s board of directors was done on merit and above board, said Maszlee Malik.
The education minister said Wahid’s selection was sound as it went through the proper procedures and discussions.
“The appointment was based on merit and prior discussion. This was also agreed to by the higher-ups,” Maszlee said in a press conference after the Islamic University Malaysia convocation today.
Bersatu supreme council member Kadir Jasin had slammed Maszlee for appointing the former Permodalan Nasional Berhad chairman and had been a minister in the previous administration.
Maszlee however defended Wahid’s appointment.
“A lot of officers now are from the previous government. It does not matter,” he said.
The Bersatu man also said the appointment of Wahid was well thought out and not based on assumptions.
“What did he (Wahid) do? To say he has been removed… is your assumption. We don’t base our decisions on assumption,” Maszlee said.
The Simpang Renggam MP has come under fire from both his fellow party members and the public over various missteps since taking office as minister. – November 10, 2018.
