UMNO is preparing for a possible by-election for the Rantau state assembly seat in Negri Sembilan, where the results of an election petition will be announced in court on November 22.
Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party was getting ready should “something bad happen”.
“The groundwork has been launched in case the court decides that a Rantau by-election must be held.
“I do not expect for the court to not be on our side but we are ready if something bad happens,” he told reporters after a meeting with Umno Negri Sembilan leaders and grassroots in Rantau today.
Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr S. Streram had filed an election petition seeking to nullify the EC’s decision in declaring Barisan Nasional candidate Mohamad Hasan as the winner of the Rantau state seat in the 14th general election.
Mohamad won the seat unopposed after returning officer Amino Agos refused to allow Dr Streram into the nomination centre on grounds that he (Dr Streram) did not have a valid pass issued by the EC.

As a result of his disqualification, the state assembly seat was won uncontested by Mohamad.
Dr Streram said he had paid the deposit of RM5,000 to register as a candidate and another RM3,000 for campaign material on April 25, and that at no time did the EC inform him that name tags or entry passes were needed for the candidate and his representatives to enter the nomination hall on April 28.
Negeri Sembilan is the fifth state in Zahid’s tour series titled “Umno President’s Special Meeting” which kicked off days after the Umno president was hit with 45 charges for corruption and money-laundering on October 19. – November 6, 2018.
