No desire to be PM or Umno president again, says Najib

FORMER prime minister Najib Razak said he is not seeking to become Umno president again or to hold the office of the prime minister and only wanted to speak up for the people.

He was responding to criticism of his tea gathering, Sembang Santai Najib (A relaxing chat with Najib), at the party’s headquarters over the weekend.

“I want to make it clear that I do not wish to become party president again, or prime minister, because I have already held that post for nine years,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

“My intention was to provide my views and ideas to strengthen the party, to help the people and to develop our nation’s economy.”

Najib, who is Pekan MP, said he believed he could still contribute as he had experience and knowledge.

“There have been slander and erroneous facts, so I believe it is my responsibility as an MP to play a role to correct what I believe needs accurate explanations based on facts and figures. 

“I hope the people will give me space to play this role, to contribute as a so-called club leader to help the people, the party and to develop Malaysia, our beloved nation.” 

Over 1,000 supporters turned up at the townhall session at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to hear Najib respond to “lies” hurled against him by Pakatan Harapan.

The session, which was aired live on Facebook, was viewed by over 600,000 users.

Former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who had contested for the president’s post at the party’s polls in July, had rebutted Najib’s remarks that Barisan Nasional lost GE14 because of “fraud, defamation and false promises made by Pakatan Harapan”.

Khairy had tweeted: “We lost because of 1MDB. The end.”

Umno-owned Malay daily Utusan Malaysia had also asked in an editorial that Najib apologise for lying about the RM2.6 billion donation found in his personal bank account.  – November 5, 2018.
