THE Election Commission will form a committee to determine the constitutionality of the last redelineation, said chairman Azhar Azizan Harun.
“A redelineation exercise can take place only once every eight years, so it would be unconstitutional for us to conduct another such exercise,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
“We will analyse the last redelineation, and determine whether the exercise was carried out fairly and in accordance with the 13th schedule of the constitution.
“If we can confirm that the redelineation is not constitutional, we will make a proposal on the correct process to undertake.”
The EC earlier today held meetings with 32 political parties, including PKR, PAS, Parti Warisan Sabah and Barisan Nasional components, on voter registration at its headquarters.
Azhar gave an assurance that the EC will seriously examine the feedback given by the parties.
The EC chairman previously said the last redelineation resulted in glaring differences in the ratio of voters between constituencies.
“The law provides that (the number of voters in each) constituency should be more or less the same”, unless there are logistical issues.
When the last redelineation exercise was carried out in March, DAP lawmaker Charles Santiago had said it brought Malaysia back to the colonial days, when the British practised the “divide and rule” concept.
Other politicians who had protested against the redrawing of electoral boundaries were Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar. – October 31, 2018.
