UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today began his nationwide roadshow to explain the party’s future and his position after being slapped with 45 criminal charges.
His starting point is Terengganu, the state PAS managed to recapture in the May 9 general election.
Zahid’s schedule in the state is to begin with Friday prayers at the Sultan Mahmood mosque in Kuala Terengganu before a lunch with local Umno leaders.
In the afternoon, he is to hold a more formal meeting with state leaders and party members at the Umno Kuala Terengganu building.
A few members of the Umno Supreme Council are accompanying Zahid.
The tour begins a day after the leadership of the Youth wing urged him to consider taking leave from his presidential duties until his court case is settled.
Umno Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said it was a unanimous decision of the wing’s exco but stressed that the call was not because it thought Zahid was guilty or to punish him.
The move has sparked a rift within the Youth wing, with a handful of division leaders immediately speaking up against Asyraf’s announcement.
Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam has also criticised Asyraf and the wing for failing to stand up for Zahid.
Zahid last week pleaded not guilty to 45 charges of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering involving funds from a foundation where he was trustee, and kickbacks involving projects while he was home minister.
Zahid became president of Umno after the party suffered defeat in GE14. – October 26, 2018.
