Not even the PM is above the law, says Dr Mahathir

No one is above the law – not even the prime minister, whether past of sitting, Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said of the slew of charges against his predecessor Najib Razak and fresh charges against two ex-senior civil servants.

The prime minister said the rule of law applied in Malaysia, which was why suspects were charged  when there was enough evidence.

“The people who prepare the charges must have enough evidence to charge the three for something so very serious.

“It’s not a game. We don’t wish to take revenge on anybody. The rule of law applies to everyone, whether it is the incumbent prime minister or former prime minister,” he said a press conference on a working visit to Bangkok today.

Dr Mahathir was asked to comment on news that Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah were charged today with criminal breach of trust involving RM6.63 billion of government funds.

Former head of Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation Hasanah Abdul Hamid was also charged with criminal breach of trust over US$12.1 million (RM50.4 million) of public funds

Dr Mahathir said in Malaysia, even the sultans and rulers were subject to the law of the land. – October 25, 2018.
