BILLION Dollar Whale co-author Tom Wright responded today to the claims by Najib Razak’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, saying that in no part of the book was it written that Najib did not know the money came from illegal proceeds.

“I do not agree with Shafee Abdullah’s reading of the book. In no part of the book did I say that Najib did not know where the money came from.” he said.

“What we were careful to say was only Jho Low had the full view of what was going on.

“Low was managing where the money was going, but in my view, it doesn’t absolve Najib from responsibility,” Tom said.

Wright said the former finance minister had given Low full access and management into the crisis-riddled sovereign wealth fund, 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

“In my mind, Najib was kind of a lazy guy who was not involved with the day-to-day running of 1MDB,” Tom said.

“He (Najib) gave Low the keys to the castle, and Low proceeds to involve powerful people in the United States,” Tom said of the links between 1MDB and Goldman-Sachs.

Shafee had previously taken a swipe at the authors of the book for being “inconsistent” and “confusing” in stating that Najib was misled by Low and that he didn’t know that the money came from illegal proceeds.

Shafee said he had read the book three times and offered to debate Wright over specific discrepancies he said he had uncovered.

Wright said Shafee may have read the book three times, but still appeared not to understand its contents.

“He said he read the book three times, but I feel like he read it three times with his eyes closed,” said Wright. – October 7, 2018.
