NEWS that Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, was arrested earlier today and is expected to be charged for money laundering tomorrow was met with delight by social media users.

Joe Lee (@klubbkiddkl) wrote on Twitter: “Rosmah Mansor arrested. I think Malaysians are smiling today.”

Kin Two Jaga (@chewkinwah) replied, tweeting: “Smiling, laughing, celebrating, I am going for some crabbing.”

Asha Regunathan (@asha_nathan) in her tweet said it was the “best news of the day”.

Sederhana Liberal (@ExTTTC) was “Smiling, cheering and applauding” while Malaysian singer Adibah Noor’s one-word response via her Twitter handle @adibahnoor was “wow!!”.

“Agaknya beliau pakai baju oren tak? (Do you think she will wear orange?),” ōməñ (@MalequeArrasyid) cheekily asked, in reference to the colour of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s lock-up attire.

Dr AF Harris (@AHFARGROUP) also wanted to see Rosmah in orange, tweeting: “This time, Baju Oren (orange shirt) please? Nobody is above the law!”

Recently, MACC was criticised for not forcing Najib and several other high-profile personalities to don the orange outfit, while others were made to do so.

On Facebook, news of Rosmah’s arrest was also trending, with thousands reacting to the news flashes with “likes”, “loves” and the “haha” emoji.

The Curi-Curi Wang Malaysia Facebook page shared the Utusan news flash of Rosmah’s arrest and remarked: “Good news for all Malaysians! Sounds even sweeter when it’s reported by Umno’s own newspaper!”

Zul Mohamed posted the news on his Facebook page, using a background of pink hearts.

Rahim Mihar said “game over” while Ronald Ho remarked: “It’s about time”.

Monica Lim also said it was the best news since May 9, referring to the 14th general election results, which saw the fall of Barisan Nasional and the removal of Najib as prime minister.

“Please make the charges stick so that lawyers cannot undo it,” Dave Rajan wrote.

Some had sarcastic remarks, like Mohd Hazmin, who said he pitied the officers who had to attend to Rosmah.

“Pity her. Don’t be so cruel. I feel sorry for the person who has to look after Rosmah tonight. Have to make sure she is comfortable. That’s difficult, you know. So cruel,” he wrote on Facebook.

Roger Lee had a sarcastic message for Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam, who was previously communications director in the Finance Ministry under BN.

“Lokman… duty calls. Bring your 50 people again please,” he said.

The Facebook user was likely referring to the candlelight vigil Lokman had organised for Najib when the former Umno president was arrested by the MACC previously, ahead of being charged in court.

Rosmah was summoned to the MACC headquarters for her third interview with the anti-graft agency this morning. The 66-year-old was arrested at 3.20pm, her lawyer Geethan Ram Vincent confirmed.

The MACC said she will be taken to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow morning to face charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

In her first two interviews by the MACC last month and in June, she was questioned over money allegedly stolen from state fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) that was channelled into Najib’s bank accounts through a former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International.

Najib is facing several charges under the same act.

Last month, he was slapped with 21 charges – nine counts of receiving illegal proceeds, seven counts of transferring the proceeds to other entities, and five counts of using illegal proceeds.

In August, he was also slapped with three money-laundering charges for allegedly receiving RM42 million in illegal proceeds linked to SRC International. – October 3, 2018.
