THE Obon festival is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honour the spirits of one’s ancestors. The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur recently marked the festivity with a Bon Odori event and dance.

The Japanese have been marking the festival for more than half a century, features a dance performance known as Bon Odori.

The Bon Odori dance is accompanied by traditional folk songs.

This is the 42nd time the event has been held in Malaysia. Last year, Malaysia and Japan celebrated 72 years of diplomatic ties.

Forty-two pupils from the Japan School of Kuala Lumpur and 140 local pupils, dressed in traditional Japanese attire, joined in the performances.

The event was also peppered with food stalls offering Japanese food for visitors. – July 23, 2018
