Pantai Puteri shrimp fishermen caught in a bind

Seth Akmal

RECLAMATION has affected the livelihoods of 300 fishermen who collect “geragau”, a small shrimp, for a living, in Pantai Puteri in Tanjung Kling, Malacca.

Locals who sell homemade belacan and cencaluk near the beach have also complained of erosion.

The fishermen said the reclamation work near Klebang, about 10km from Pantai Puteri, have caused strong wave currents and coastal erosion in the last 10 years.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department has installed rock revetment blocks as a wave breaker but the fishermen said this has worsened the situation because the rocks damage their nets and injured some of the fishermen.

The fishermen want the authorities to build a beach at least 100 metres away from Pantai Puteri to  stabilise the waves and create a safe habitat for the shrimps. – November 15, 2021.
