MUD, a play about the origins of the capital city Kuala Lumpur, has entertained its last audience after being performed nearly 2,000 times at the historic Panggung Bandaraya right next to the confluence of the two rivers that gave the city its Malay name.
Panggung Bandaraya DBKL is itself a historic building at the side of the Merdeka Square. The Indo-Saracenic design building was built in 1896 with construction completed in 1904 when Kuala Lumpur was at the centre of a tin-mining boom in Selangor.
That itself was the premise for the story of Kuala Lumpur performed under the title MUD since 2014, which has entertained Malaysians of all ages and races as well as hordes of tourist nearly 2,000 times – 1,854 under contract with City Hall.
The final curtain call on April 30, 2017 was to enable a thorough renovation of the theatre for future shows in the centre of the city.
The Malaysian Insight visited the backstage to see performers preparing themselves for the finale of MUD KL.
