THE Environment Department (DoE) has issued a nationwide ban on open burning as the country’s smoke problem worsens.
Director-General Norlin Jaafar said open burning is prohibited, except for cremation and religious rituals, until the southwest monsoon ends.
“All parties are prohibited from conducting open burning, or allowing their land or premises to be invaded by irresponsible parties resulting in open burning for a specific purpose or inadvertently,” she said in a statement.
She urged the public to help put out small fires and report them to the Fire and Rescue Department and DoE.
The Meteorological Department, meanwhile, warned of unhealthy air quality until tomorrow in Sarawak (Sri Aman, Serian, Kuching and Betong), several states in the peninsula (Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Johor) and Sabah (Tenom and Sipitang). – September 11, 2019.
