PULAU Gaya residents, who have long depended on vendors for their supply of treated water, will now be the first in Sabah to have access to prepaid water supply.
State Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Junz Wong said 510 households in two villages will be supplied with water from the system before it is expanded to the rest of the island.
Pulau Gaya folk spend between RM150 and RM300 a month on treated water, which they buy from vendors on boats who get their supply from the mainland.
Pulau Gaya’s water woes made the news before last year’s general election, when the Public Accounts Committee found that an allocation exceeding RM100 million to build a supply pipeline was not fully utilised.
The system’s cost of RM5.3 million will be borne by the state Infrastructure Development Ministry. It will be completed in five months. - September 4, 2019.
