PAS is holding its first annual congress, or muktamar, in Pahang this year, a state in which it made major inroads in the last general election.
The new venue is also symbolic of the Islamist party’s aim of forging an electoral pact with Umno. According to PAS leaders, the stadium they are holding the muktamar in was offered at significantly lower cost by the Umno-led Pahang government.
PAS has three wings: the Dewan Ulama comprises jurists and scholars who chart the party’s direction, a youth wing and a section for its women, the muslimat.
