THE Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) incepted in 1991 has helped Malaysia stay abreast of a rapidly growing defence industry, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At the launch of the five-day biennual show on March 26, he said thanks to the event, Malaysia has gained prominence for hosting the leading maritime and aerospace exhibition in Asia Pacific.

“As the Langkawi MP, it is indeed with pride that I witness this edition of Lima still attracting international maritime and aerospace players, and businesses from all corners of the globe.

“The 15th edition of Lima brings back memories of the momentous 1991 edition when I launched the first blueprint for the development of the aerospace Industry in Malaysia.

“It was a bold move for some and baby steps for others. But looking at what we had before and the development of the aerospace industry today, it was a necessary move to ensure Malaysia kept up with a rapidly growing industry.”

Putrajaya signed more than RM4 billion worth of deals with various companies at the events, which had 406 participants from the defence and private sectors of 32 countries.

Most of the contracts totalling RM3.67 billion were for maintenance, repair and overhaul of defence assets. About RM500 million went to agreements and memoranda of understanding for procurement and industrial collaboration. – April 1, 2019.
