THE Penang International Dragon Boat Festival has been a part of the state’s cultural heritage for 39 years and the annual boat race attracts thousands of residents, tourists and participants worldwide.

This year’s race attracted the highest number of participation from various countries. A total of 85 teams competed in five events with a mix of 12 racers and 22 racers over a course of 200m or 500m.

A carnival-like event permeates the air as teams from various states from Malaysia, and teams from Macau to Singapore, China to Australia, set up banners and mats under tents for this annual event. Paddlers in colourful uniforms with supporters in tow, mingle and cheer each other on as the events are announced over loudspeakers.

Shouts from the coxes racing in the qualifying rounds go together with the vigorous beating of drums. The coxswain is in charge of the overall operation of the boat as it propels towards the finishing line. Rowers displayed their prowess and teamwork as they synchronise each paddle stroke to the beat of the drum. – December 13, 2018.
