HUSBANDS suffer from “emotional and psychological” abuse when their wives deny them sex or the right to marry another woman, and should have their rights protected, said a Terengganu lawmaker.

Setiu member of parliament Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh said nagging wives were also a source of abuse to some men.

“Men are generally physically stronger than women, so they are subjected to emotional and psychological abuse, which is even worse,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

“This includes having a wife who denies conjugal rights to her husband or one who constantly nags,” he said during a debate on the Domestic Violence Act (Amendments) 2017 bill in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Che Mohamad said women who denied their husbands’ request to take in another wife were also abusing the menfolk.

“Some want to marry more than one woman, but need to get permission from their wives, who disagree and begin nagging.”

More than 4,000 men are spousal abuse victims, according to data revealed by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim on Monday.

“Between 2014 and last year, there were 15,617 domestic violence cases, of which 74% of the victims were women,” she said when tabling the bill for debate. – July 26, 2017.
