NAJIB Razak’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, has called for further documents to be made available to the defence, saying they were only served a charge sheet detailing the former prime minister’s alleged offences.
The renown lawyer also defended his application for an interim gag order, saying there is a time gap until case management on August 8.
“Lawyers have a certain amount of arrogance. Intellectually, we are arrogant, but I do not want people to think I’m unfair.
“I hope that parameter, that somehow, fairness will prevail.”
Najib was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power at the sessions court this morning in relation to RM42 million that was allegedly siphoned off from SRC International.
SRC International is a former subsidiary of the debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd, which Najib formed and once headed.
High court judge Sofian Abd Razak has approved Shafee’s request for an interim gag order on digital and print media, preventing them from discussing the merits of the case.
He said Shafee needs to apply to make the gag order permanent, and the interim order is valid for only 14 days.
The gag order does not cover news reporting on court proceedings.
Shafee said the gag order is to prevent individuals or parties from making statements deemed unfair to Najib.
On whether the prosecution has a good case against his client, Shafee said: “We have a good defence, and you will see when trial starts.” – July 4, 2018.
