PAKATAN Harapan’s hopes of a “Malay tsunami” to topple Barisan Nasional might not materialise as votes might not go to the opposition coalition, reports Free Malaysia Today.
There is a possibility the Malay votes will go to PAS rather than PH, Merdeka Center for Opinion Research executive director Ibrahim Suffian said.
Malay voters are concerned with issues like Malay rights and this must be addressed by PH, he said.
“A tsunami can occur due to the people’s unhappiness over things like the GST. The rising cost of living can swing votes, too.
“But economic factors alone are not a single important issue for them. Malay rights are also a factor. So, we’re not sure where the Malay votes will go,” he was quoted as saying.
“If it doesn’t go to PH, then it could go to PAS or even swing back to BN,” Ibrahim told FMT after a forum entitled Multi-cornered contest: bane or boon?.
In July, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said a “Malay tsunami” in the 14th general election was inevitable because the Malays have lost faith in Umno.
Ibrahim said it is better to refer to “swing voters” who are not loyal to any party, stating that PH is taking a simplistic view and assuming it can win GE14 by riding on a Malay tsunami. – October 8, 2017.
