Police wrap up 1MDB probe, no further development expected

POLICE have completed investigations into alleged corruption in state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said today.

There would be no new developments unless there were further instructions from the Cabinet or the parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), he was reported saying by Malaysiakini.

“No, no. We have no need (to investigate further) since the investigation has been completed…unless we have further instructions from the PAC or Cabinet,” Fuzi told the press in Kelantan today.

Fuzi, who took over as IGP this month, also said he had no new developments on the case that he needed to inform the media and the public.

In June, his predecessor Khalid Abu Bakar, told the media that the Attorney-General’s Chambers had ordered the police to look into “a few areas” in their investigation into 1MDB and claims of misappropriation that allegedly financed an international spending spree on luxury assets involving persons linked to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Khalid said the probe began last year after the auditor-general presented a report to the bipartisan parliamentary PAC.

Excerpts of that report were incorporated into PAC’s own findings, which were tabled in Parliament in April last year. The audit report was later classified under the Official Secrets Act.

The 1MDB scandal has led to investigations in Singapore, Switzerland, the US and other countries.Recently, the US Department of Justice started a criminal investigation into money allegedly stolen from 1MDB, delaying civil suits filed the past two years to forfeit more than US$1 billion (RM4.28 billion) in real estate and other assets.

DoJ officials asked a judge in Los Angeles to freeze the civil forfeiture lawsuits against assets acquired by Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, as pursuing these may have “an adverse effect” on its ability to conduct the criminal investigation.

Low, who has been repeatedly accused of being the brain behind the scandal, has denied all wrongdoing. – September 20, 2017.
