MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and AirAsia must amicably settle the suit over unpaid passenger service charge (PSC) brought by the former against the latter, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the ministry will try to de-escalate tensions between the airport management company and low-cost carrier, and called on the parties to work out a peaceful settlement.

“We will try to de-escalate the tensions between MAHB and AirAsia. It is best for both parties to reach a peaceful settlement.

“I have informed both MAHB and AirAsia to settle the matter amicably and harmoniously,” he said when asked about the matter at klia2 today.

MAHB is suing Air Asia Bhd (AAB) and its long-haul affiliate, Air Asia X Bhd (AAX), for a combined total of RM36.11 million in PSC unpaid since July.

MAHB is claiming RM9.4 million from AAB, and RM26.7 million from AAX.

It was reported that AirAsia refused to charge the RM23 difference in PSC per passenger, which was raised to RM73 at the beginning of the year, on the grounds that klia2 is a low-cost terminal, and the charges levied at the airport should reflect the level of service provided.

Airlines collect PSC from departing passengers, and later remit the funds to MAHB.

AirAsia has vowed to fight MAHB’s claims, saying they are without justification. – December 13, 2018.

  • Ministry job is to Regulate. Allow the companies to slug out in the courts - then the issues in contention will be known to the public.

  • Agreed, the level of service in KLIA2 is inferior than KLIA. Well done Airasia for standing your ground, hope the minister can do something about the ridiculous PSC rate.
