I support Anwar, but will not campaign for him, says Dr Mahathir

DR Mahathir Mohamad has endorsed Anwar Ibrahim for the Port Dickson by-election, but will not go on the campaign trail for him.

The prime minister said he did not usually go on the campaign trail for by-elections, but gave the green light for Anwar to contest.

“I told Anwar that I don’t normally campaign for by-elections, but I would endorse his campaign,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference today.

He said Anwar informed him about contesting in Port Dickson while the former deputy prime minister was in Hong Kong last week. – September 14, 2018.

  • Mahathir is right. A sitting prime minister never campaigns in a by-election. That is a Westminster convention. Even if the candidate is from his own party.
