PAS will not contest in the Port Dickson by-election and is prepared to campaign for Umno, says Dewan Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed.
“It was decided last night that we will not contest in Port Dickson,” Mahfodz said at a press conference in Kuala Terengganu today.
PAS is holding its annual congress or muktamar, which began today, in Terengganu.
He said the decision is not yet official but the party had already decided last night to “let others contest” and return Umno’s favour for supporting the party in the recent Seri Setia by-election.
“We will return the favour,” said deputy chief Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh.
He added that they would even campaign for any opposition candidates against Pakatan Harapan.
“There is an understanding among all the opposition parties, including those in Sabah and Sarawak that we will not contest against one another in any by-election against Pakatan,” said Nik.
MIC is also not planning to contest the seat in the constituency that is made up of 42% Malay, 33% Chinese and 22% Indian voters.
The seat was vacated yesterday by incumbent Danyal Balagopal Abdullah who resigned to make way for PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim to contest in a by-election and pave the way for his return to the Dewan Rakyat. – September 13, 2018.
