A 2.8-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck near Keningau in the Sabah interior last night.

Residents said they felt the ground rumble twice in the 11.44pm incident, but they were not strong enough to cause panic.

“It was not really frightening… We just stayed home while the tremors occurred,” said a pastor, known as Mic, who lives near Keningau town.

The Meteorological Department, in a statement, said the quake, with a depth of 10km, struck near the eastern side of the district, 22km from Sipitang.

The Civil Defence Force immediately deployed personnel to check on premises in the area and ensure safety.

No damage to premises or loss of lives was recorded. – August 3, 2017.
