SHAFEE Abdullah’s explanation that he was paid RM9.5 million for previous work done for Umno does not inspire confidence, says Gurdial Singh Nijar, a lawyer representing Anwar Ibrahim.
Gurdial pointed out that Shafee’s explanation that he was paid the money for work done over a period of nearly 10 years was not convincing.
“Especially in light of the circumstances surrounding the payment, its timing and the fact that the payment was made by Najib (former prime minister Najib Razak).
“I strongly urge Shafee to come up with a more cogent explanation to assuage public perception and disquiet, as it has implications for the integrity of the legal system and consequently perhaps even the rule of law,” said Gurdial who is also president of the National Human Rights Society (Hakam).
Shafee, who is currently representing Najib in the SRC International graft case, today denied being paid RM9.5 million for his services as ad hoc prosecutor in Anwar’s second sodomy trial.
Anwar, who was convicted in 2014 and jailed a year later, had said his lawyers had received an affidavit signed by an Attorney-General’s Chambers officer backing his claim that the Umno lawyer was paid the amount after prosecuting him.
The officer claimed that Najib had issued two cheques on September 11, 2013 and February 14, 2014 for RM4.3 million and RM5.2 million, respectively, and that Shafee received the money in his account on September 13, 2013 and February 17, 2014.
Anwar had earlier applied for the court to overturn his conviction, saying the prosecution’s integrity was compromised as Shafee was paid RM9.5 million by Najib.
He had based his application on a Sarawak Report article published in June last year, alleging that the funds transferred into Shafee’s accounts came from a bank account that was funded by money taken from the former 1Malaysia Development Bhd subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd, which had borrowed RM4 billion from the civil service pension fund Retirement Fund Inc, or KWAP.
Shafee, in a statement today, claimed that the RM9.5 million was paid for his 14-year service to Umno and Barisan Nasional where he had represented them in 46 election petitions.
He also alleged he was hired by Najib as the ad hoc prosecutor upon the insistence of Dr Mahathir Mohamad. – September 8, 2018.

Shafee received RM9.5mil for services rendered in prosecuting Anwar under the Sodomy II trial.
When Shafee worked so closely with Najib (as his crony), how in the world can Dr M be involved with the Shafee character in the first place.. not believable not plausible..
Shafee is doing his part by distracting his critics and throwing an unfounded story in the works!
Hopefully the leaders of the PH coalition are not rattled by this mans unfounded lies!!
