Zahid should focus on IS fighters here, not Dr Mahathir's lineage, says DAP

AHMAD Zahid Hamidi should focus on the problems plaguing the country instead of using government agencies to play politics, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim said today, referring to the use of MyKad details to run down former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The deputy prime minister and home minister told Parliament that Malaysia expelled 14 high-risk Islamic State fighters, while 16 others remained in the country.

Sim, a DAP lawmaker, had earlier asked Zahid about the entry of 30 “high-risk” IS fighters into Malaysia.

“How did our Immigration let the IS fighters enter Malaysia in the first place?

“I have raised many times inside and outside Parliament about the problems with our billion-ringgit biometric and computerised Immigration management system as well as syndicates facilitating the flouting of immigration laws,” said Sim at a press conference today.

He said the government has only rounded up less than half of the fighters who have entered the country two months ago.

“I do not know which is more frightening, that there are at least 16 known IS fighters are in our midst or that even our authorities do not know how many fighters were brought into Malaysia and their whereabouts today.

“All these issues are under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry. As such, it is clear that there is a real crisis within the ministry.

“It is unfortunate that the home minister cum deputy prime minister is busying himself and tragically, the agencies under his charge, to dig an old NRIC of Dr Mahathir instead of dealing decisively and competently against the crisis facing his ministry,” added Sim. – August 1, 2017.
