PUTRAJAYA is mulling the idea of rewarding good drivers who who do not receive demerit points for a whole year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the reward would be in the form of a discount on vehicle insurance.

Loke said the ministry would discuss the matter further with the General insurance Association of Malaysia (Piam), which had mooted the idea during a dialogue session.

“We want to enforce a system where we reward responsible drivers. If they do not get demerit points for a year, maybe we can give them a discount on their insurance,” he told reporters at the AES Command Centre in Kelana Jaya, today.

Loke said the idea was brought up by Piam when they had a dialogue session together.

On whether the reward could also come in the form of a discount on road tax, Loke said a thorough review was necessary before such a discount could be effected.

“We do want to study how we can change the road tax system. But right now, I cannot implement it because we need it to be thoroughly studied first.

Loke added the ministry did not consider summonses as a way of earning revenue.

“If everyone (drivers) behaved, we would not have revenue from summonses,” which was just fine with the government, he said. –  September 3, 2018.
