Where are the 1 million affordable homes, asks Sandakan MP

AN opposition lawmaker has accused Barisan National of failing to fulfil its GE13 manifesto to build one million affordable homes (RMM) within five years.

Sandakan MP Wong Tien Fatt (DAP) said as of April 2017, the completion rate stood only at 27% (237,738) from the one million nationwide.

“From the manifesto, they said they will build one million affordable homes in five years, by 2018. But the answer I received is they only completed 27% of the promised number.

“Apart from Kedah, which they managed to complete 72%, numbers for other states are all below 30%, especially in Sabah – 24%.

“Now I’m asking Barisan Nasional whether they can fulfil promise,” he said in a press conference at Parliament today.

He was referring to a written reply from the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry on the number of affordable units completed after the 13th general election for each state.

According to the reply, the ministry said the one million target is expected to be achieved year-end.

Wong also questioned why the Rent-to-Own (RTO) programme was not extended to Sabah, which would help people with lower income to own a home.

“Our incomes are lower than those in the peninsula, but the house prices are equivalent to KL. I’m asking the BN government to answer how many units can be built and completed in less than one year,” he said. – July 31, 2017.
