PUTRAJAYA’s new occupants should stop enforcing laws that violate human rights, such as jailing people without giving them a fair trial, which was happening right now to illegal immigrants, said Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioner Jerald Joseph.

He said the right way was to hold a proper investigation before prosecuting a person.

“That is the right approach for the government to protect human rights. For the last 60 years, we have yet to see that,” he said at the forum, Let’s Talk: Child Marriage and Pakatan Harapan’s promises of Human Rights, in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Joseph said the government should also share and work towards Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s vision of Bangsa Malaysia.

“We should work at it. It will not be easy, but we can work towards it.”

Bangsa Malaysia is a concept introduced in 1991 by Dr Mahathir, as part of the Vision 2020 plan.

Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei said the government was working to deliver what it promised in its manifesto to do for human rights.

She conceded that the government should engage with more human rights groups.
