SUBANG Jaya councillor Wong Siew Ki is most likely DAP’s candidate for the Balakong by-election.
Wong has been a councillor since 2016 and has served as a political secretary to former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah.
A well-placed source told The Malaysian Insight a five-member committee headed by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang deliberated on four potential candidates for Balakong until late last night.
The other four members are DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai, secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo and vice-chairman M. Kulasegaran.
DAP is expected to announce its Balakong candidate at its party headquarters at 1pm tomorrow.
Wong told The Malaysian Insight she has not received any formal announcement from the party.
The 32-year-old has a modern language and communication degree and a master’s in Chinese literature from Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Wong, however, said she will have an advantage if the party wants to propose a female candidate to increase and meet the target of having 30% women representation in the Selangor state assembly.
Balakong DAP grassroots leaders have reacted strongly against rumours that former Astro AEC host and journalist Yunna Tan, who resigned from her post to join DAP recently, will be the party’s by-election candidate.
The Balakong by-election was triggered after its incumbent Eddie Ng Tien Chee died in an accident at KM11.7 of the Grand Saga Expressway on July 20. β August 13, 2018.
