THE decision on whether Musa Aman will be granted more time to take his assemblyman’s oath will be made known in a few days, said Sabah Speaker Syed Abbas Syed Ali.

He said he will respond accordingly to the former chief minister’s application, and that his office will issue a statement soon.

“As far as (procedures) are concerned, you are an assemblyman only after you have been sworn in,” he said during the state assembly sitting in Kota Kinabalu today.

Syed Abbas said the decision on Musa’s request does not require the assembly’s approval as there are enough provisions in the state constitution addressing the matter.

Article 22 (2) of the Sabah constitution states: “If a member has not taken his seat within three months (90 days) from the date on which the legislative assembly first sits after his election or appointment, or within such further period as the assembly may allow, his seat shall become vacant.”

Musa won the Sungai Sibuga seat in the May 9 general election. He then left Malaysia, unannounced, on May 16.

It was reported that he had gone to the UK seeking medical treatment. – August 13, 2018.
