NAJIB Razak should still be accorded respect, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today, after party members called for the disgraced former party chief to be barred from campaigns in upcoming by-elections.
He said Najib should not be pressured publicly like he was today by Umno Titiwangsa division chief Johari Abdul Ghani, who earlier said the party had been unwise in allowing Najib to campaign in the recent Sungai Kandis by-election.
“That was his (Johari’s) personal opinion. We should still respect a friend who is now down and out. Whatever differences of opinion, there are more appropriate ways to state one’s views,” Zahid told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
“Don’t step on people when they are down, even if we don’t agree with what they have done.”
Johari had said it was a mistake that would cost Umno the people’s trust to allow Najib on the campaign trail pending his corruption trial and amid the scandals surrounding him.
He said Najib should not be sent on the campaign trail in the Seri Setia and Balakong by-elections that will be held on September 8 after a 21-day campaign.
Former prime minister Najib had appeared in Sungai Kandis twice during the 14-day campaign period for the Selangor state seat, to support Barisan Nasional candidate Lokman Noor Adam.
But the former prime minister did not turn up at a ceramah where he was scheduled to speak.
Zahid said Najib had campaigned at the invitation of Lokman.
“It was the candidate himself who had good intentions and arranged for Najib to be present. – August 8, 2018.
