ALL corruption cases in Penang should proceed in court, including the case involving former chief minister Lim Guan Eng, said the state’s opposition leader Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor.
Lim, who has since become finance minister after Pakatan Harapan’s victory in Putrajaya, is facing graft charges over his purchase of his Jalan Pinhorn bungalow below the market price several years ago.
The case is pending the Attorney-General’s Chamber’s decision on a review applied by the defence to drop the charges.
Opposition leader Muhamad Yusof Mohd Noor (BN-Sungai Dua) said there should be no cover-up of such cases.
“The case should continue with the trial,” he said in his maiden speech as opposition leader at the Penang state assembly sitting this afternoon.
Yusoff said five cases against nine people had been dropped by the Attorney-General’s Chambers from June 1 until last week, following PH’s victory.
Charges against several PH leaders that were dropped include Sungai Buloh MP and Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister R. Sivarasa, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, Kampar MP Thomas Su, and former Padang Serai MP N. Surendran.
PH supporter cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Haque (Zunar) also had his nine sedition charges dropped.
Former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, who was found guilty under the Official Secrets Act for leaking banking information in relation to the National Feedlot Corporation scandal, escaped a jail sentence when the Court of Appeal substituted the punishment with a good behaviour bond.
Yusoff said even Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) cases were being dropped.
The PH government recently said it would repeal Sosma.
“We hope the case of the former Penang chief minister will not end up like that too.
“Go on with the trial until the end. If he is innocent, he is innocent,” Yusoff said. – August 6, 2018.
