THE tenders that took place at the Youth and Sports Ministry under the previous administration went through a strict monitoring process, said Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.

The former youth and sports minister under the BN administration said all limited and direct tenders that took place during his tenure followed the rules.

“I am ready to help the (youth and sports) minister and deputy to explain whatever issues they have, or any parties for that matter,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Khairy was responding to current Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim who had said that a lot of direct tenders had taken place during Khairy’s tenure, especially during the SEA Games last year.

Khairy admitted that some projects for the SEA Games were not done via open tenders but added the ministry had requested for proposals.

He said the ministry would not have been able to evaluate the creativity of the performances for SEA Games if the process was done through open tender.

“I hope there is no conclusion made that all this means corruption.

“This is only a method of awarding, does not prove corruption. I am prepared to explain to the minister and deputy,” added Khairy.

Earlier today, Sim said the ministry had maintained the direct-tender process for all its contracts, even after an incident in 2016 in which a senior ministry official was alleged to have embezzled up to RM107 million in government funds.

Khairy also rebutted the fact and said the individual involved has been charged and the amount was RM38 million, and not RM100 million. – August 2, 2018.
