WOMEN leaders from both PAS and Umno teamed up to decry a lack of urgency by the government in defending the rights of Muslim women to protect their modesty by covering up.

At a joint press conference at the Parliament lobby today, PAS women’s head Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff and her Umno counterpart, Noraini Ahmad, said the rights of conservative Muslim women were threated in the new government’s haste to adopt a more liberal stance.

“If we claim to be open-minded to the freedom to expose oneself, then surely we must be open-minded to the right to cover up, which is demanded by a majority of Muslim women in this country,” Siti Zailah said.

The Rantau Panjang MP also slammed Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto and Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah for twisting her statement in Parliament yesterday where she urged the government to formulate a policy requiring Muslim women to cover themselves up.

“She considers my call to dress modestly as putting the blame on women in the area of sexual harassment, which is a inaccurate,” said Siti Zailah, who added that the DAP lawmaker “clearly does not understand the issue holistically”. – August 2, 2018.

  • But isn't up to the individual if they wish to cover themselves up? Why need to police these things? Am I being insensitive here? My apologies if yes.
