THE Sales Tax Bill 2018 and Service Tax Bill 2018 have been tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The repeal of the Goods and Services Tax Bill 2018 is also tabled for first reading by the Finance Ministry.

The bill is listed number one on the Parliament Order paper today.

Other bills to be tabled include Customs (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Free Zones (Amendment) Bill 2018.

On July 16, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the SST would be set at 10% for sales and 6% for services.

Lim said the SST, together with rising crude oil prices and extra dividends from government-linked companies, will bring in an additional RM14.4 billion to make up for the loss of RM21 billion from the zero-rating of the GST from June 1.

Replacing the highly unpopular GST with the SST was among the promises made by Pakatan Harapan in its election manifesto. – July 31, 2018.
