SST Bill to be tabled next week, says minister

THE Sales and Services Tax (SST) Bill is expected to be tabled in Dewan Rakyat next week for the first reading, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong.

He also said the government was hopeful to table a motion to abolish the unpopular consumption tax, Goods and Services Tax Act, next week.

“SST has to be introduced before it takes effect on September 1,

“(SST Bill) will be tabled some time next week,” he told reporters when met at Parliament’s lobby today.

The SST will replace the GST on September 1, fulfilling one of the new Pakatan Harapan government’s election promises.

The Customs Department recently said goods sold under the new sales and services tax will be taxed at 0%, 5% or 10%, while services will be taxed across the board at 6%.

According to the Customs website, taxable services include food and beverages, electricity tariffs, insurance, hotel, clubs and gaming.

Liew meanwhile confirmed that the government was working towards abolishing the Anti-Fake News Act 2018.

“The recommendation for now is total abolishment. It’s in the pipeline, I have prepared the memorandum and we will submit it to the cabinet for approval,” he said. – July 23, 2018.
