SELANGOR Menteri Besar Amiruddin Shari has given his assurance that state resources will not be abused to back PKR candidate Zawawi Ahmad Mughni in the Sungai Kandis by-election.

The Sungai Tua assemblyman said although Selangor is governed by Pakatan Harapan, state agencies will not be involved in the by-election.

“We can still use the official car, but I’m not using (state) agencies to give money or goodies to voters.

“But there’s no rule disallowing us from using the official car,” he said after officiating at Pakatan Harapan’s operations room for the Sungai Kandis by-election.

Earlier in his speech, Amiruddin said he would not abuse his position as menteri besar and Pakatan Harapan leader in campaigning for Zawawi, a tahfiz school principal.

“When I go to the ground, I’m a member or leader of Pakatan Harapan, and there will be no party flags at government functions.

“We are gentlemen, unlike them,” he said, likely alluding to the previous Barisan Nasional government, which had been accused of using government resources in election campaigns.

The Sungai Kandis by-election will see a three-cornered fight between Zawawi, BN’s Lokman Noor Adam and independent K. Murthy, a retired civil servant. Polling is on August 4.

This is the first by-election following the general election on May 9. The seat fell vacant after assemblyman Shuhaimie Shafiei died on July 2. – July 22, 2018.
