LAWYERS for Liberty yesterday assisted nine families to lodge police reports in Klang, Selangor, over 10 missing family members.
LFL representative Latheefa Koya said nine reports were lodged for 10 people as one family had two siblings.
“The families contacted us today (Tuesday) claiming their family members were arrested by the police.
“We are here to assist them in finding out what had happened to the 10 men who were arrested,” she said outside the Klang Selatan police headquarters.
Latheefa also chided the police for failing to provide any information on the whereabouts of the men, who were arrested over a 10-day period in July.
“Basically, this is unprecedented, as we have never come across a situation where the police are unable to tell us if they have arrested the men.
“They (police) kept saying that couldn’t tell us if the men were arrested and they kept mentioning that it was a Bukit Aman operation,” she said, referring to the alleged arrest of the men by the federal police headquarters.
Latheefa said the families are in the dark and that was why they lodged missing person’s and unlawful arrest reports.
“The families claim that they were arrested by the police last week. They said the police did not provide any detail. These are basic rights of a person, they should know what they are being arrested for.
“If they don’t know that, then it’s as good as being kidnapped or detained against their will.”
Latheefa added that they expect more information from the police.
S. Parvathy, 50 who lodged a report said that her son R. Kartigeyan, 20, was arrested on July 13 at the CIMB bank in Bukit Tinggi by plainclothes policemen and taken to the Shah Alam police headquarters.
“We were informed that our son was to be released today, but instead he was sent to IPD Klang Selatan.
“I don’t know whether he was arrested. I’m very concerned for his safety,” she said. – July 19, 2017.
